Retired fire-fighter Bernadette Hannon is celebrating this week after becoming the latest Veterans’ Lottery first prize winner

Bernadette, from Rayleigh in Essex, scooped £5,000 in the January draw – and intendeds to spend the money ‘looking after family and friends’.

“I’ve never won anything, so this is a huge bonus,” said Bernadette.

“The timing is fantastic. It’s completely unexpected but very welcome and I’ll be using the money to treat family and friends.”

Bernadette signed up to the Veterans’ Lottery nearly a year ago and is a long-term supporter of numerous veterans’ charities.

“Our family has a long military history so I’m a firm believer in giving something back to all those brave men and women who have done, and continue to do, such amazing work for our country.

“I’m extremely grateful to have won but the money really is just a bonus – I play the Veterans’ Lottery because I know my contribution goes to help so many fantastic causes.”

The January draw also saw Tony Mitchell, from Great Yarmouth, win the £2,000 second prize, while a further 10 £100 prizes were also awarded.
