Ex-soldier completes 185-mile coastal walk to raise money for the Veterans’ Foundation

May 19 2021

A former soldier who served for five years in the British Army has raised nearly £1,500 after completing a gruelling 185-mile coastal walk in aid of the Veterans’ Foundation.

Michael Northfield – accompanied by his faithful border collie, Bob - braved wet, windy and occasionally cold conditions to complete the hike in just two weeks.

Wild camping in coastal Cumbria for most of the expedition, the 41-year-old, from Leeds, undertook the walk to raise funds for the Veterans’ Foundation – a charity he insists continues to provide amazing support to British veterans in need.

“I’m exhausted but delighted to have raised what I have for such a brilliant cause,” said Michael, who served as a Tank Transporter io the Royal Logistics Corps.

“There were times, when both Bob and I were wet, cold and tired, that I wondered if it was possible to get to the finish line, but someone would always seem to pick me up.

“The support I received from a number of people was amazing – from cups of tea and warm food to dry hats and gloves – it was enough to keep me going.

“And of course it’s fantastic that so many people have donated to the Veterans’ Foundation because at the end of the day, that’s what it was all about.”

Michael made headlines in May 2018 when he landed £1m as a EuroMillions winner. Despite the money enabling him to invest in property and purchase a motorhome, he is still troubled by his experiences while in service.

“I joined the Army at 20 and spent five happy years serving my country,” he added. “But during tours of Kuwait and Kosovo, I experienced things that still live with me now. Yes, wining the money has enabled me to do things I wouldn’t have been able to, but I suffer with bouts of loneliness and find it difficult to hold down relationships. In truth, my best friend is my dog, Bob! He has been a life-saver and I’m not sure where I’d be if it wasn’t for him.

“I know how hard it is leaving the services and I now want to do what I can to help veterans in need.”
