Veterans in Action
Why does the Veterans' Foundation support Veterans in Action?
Veterans in Action uses the outdoors, challenging events, expeditions and centre-based projects to help veterans rebuild their confidence, self-esteem and self-belief. The charity was started in early 2008 by three ex-Royal Engineer friends, two of whom had been injured physically and one who suffered from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). They wanted to raise funds for injured troops both physically and psychologically.
The charity takes a long term and non-clinical approach to veteran’s mental health. Over the last six years, Veterans in Action have walked a distance of 12,600 miles across Britain with over 500 veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
The charity has devised their own unique program called ALIVE that takes a holistic view of veterans' mental health covering different contributing factors that cause stress and to signpost veterans to organisations who cover aspects not covered by the charity.
Veterans in Action provides a safe place for veterans to get involved on expeditions alongside other veterans and at their Hampshire ALIVE Centre where people can attend on a daily basis.
The charity leads long-distance treks all over Britain each year to enable them to reach veterans that cannot be reached at their centre. Walking is a huge way of relieving stress and participating on a Veterans in Action expedition gives veterans newfound confidence to help them move forward with long term support from the Veterans in Action Team.
