Marine Samuel Giles William Alexander MC was born in Hammersmith on 16 June 1982 and grew up with his parents, Stuart and Serena, and sister Sophie. He married Claire in November 2009, and their son Leo arrived in July 2010. Sam joined the Royal Marines in July 2006, passed fit in October 2007, and after completing training served in Mike and then Juliet Companies of 42 Commando. During Operation HERRICK 9 he was awarded the Military Cross for conspicuous gallantry, later training as a Heavy Weapons specialist before returning for Operation HERRICK 14.
On Friday 27 May 2011, Marine Alexander was assigned to a patrol tasked with disrupting insurgent activity in the Loy Mandeh area of Nad ‘Ali district, Helmand province — an operation designed to give depth to the wider Clear, Hold, Build campaign. During that patrol, their vehicle struck an improvised explosive device — Sam Alexander MC and Lieutenant Ollie Augustin fell in action, fighting side by side to protect each other and the civilians they served. They were both 42 Commando Royal Marines, united in purpose and sacrifice.
His loss leaves a gap that cannot be filled. Sam’s selfless bravery, devotion to his young family and unwavering professionalism, endure in the memories of all who served with him.
