Addaction

Why does Veterans' Foundation support Addaction (We Are With You)?

Addaction (recently relaunched as We Are With You) was founded in 1967 and exists to help people across the UK recover from alcohol and drugs misuse as well as supporting those with mental health issues.

The charity currently runs 81 services throughout the UK and it is open to everyone in need. Young, old, in rehab, prison or just someone who needs some help, Addaction (We Are With You) is there to provide support when required.

The charity was started by a mother whose son developed an addiction to heroin. Mollie Craven’s piece in the Guardian stated: “I would like to appeal to everyone interested in this agonising problem to form an association. We can help each other, we can help with research into the problem and its origin and cure; we can cooperate with the new legislation; in many ways, we can help each other's children where we cannot help our own.”

Addaction (We Are With You) also runs projects specifically for British Armed Forces veterans in need. The Right Turn initiative provides specialist assistance to veterans. Every year 17,000 leave the forces and most make a successful transition to civilian life, but there are others who struggle with the adjustment.

In these cases, veterans can resort to drugs or alcohol misuse to help them cope. Addaction’s Right Turn scheme has enjoyed outstanding results with 96% of those taking part stating a renewed sense of belonging in civilian life.
