A huge congratulations to Cheryl Tavakoli, who has won the £5,000 first prize in the latest Veterans’ Lottery draw.
The 63-year-old from Doncaster secured the top prize in April’s draw and described the win as “amazing”.
“I’ve never won anything in my life, ever!” exclaimed Cheryl.
“An hour before I found out, I was just saying to my son that I was going to get some new garden furniture, so when I got the call, I ran upstairs and said, ‘I’m definitely getting it now’.”
Cheryl has spent over 20 years working in the prison service and has spent much of that working alongside veterans, as well as teaching classes to veteran inmates, so is all too aware of the difficulties veterans face after service.
She has also seen the terrible consequences of war, being close to someone who lost their son in the conflict in Afghanistan.
“I don’t know all the details, but I know that it was his first tour”, said Cheryl.
“It will never leave her, it’s just terrible.”
For Cheryl, playing the Veterans’ Lottery was the obvious way to help not only veterans, but their families and dependants as well.
“£10 a month is nothing, so have a go – if my £10 a month can help then that’s really great.”
So, what would our April winner say to those thinking about playing the Veterans’ Lottery?
“I’d tell anyone that was thinking of doing it – do it!”
“Obviously, I’ve won now and £5,000 is a lot of money, but people should play because the money goes to a good cause and really helps our veterans,” explained Cheryl.
