Help a Homeless Veteran this Christmas

Help a Homeless Veteran this Christmas
Every second matters, every pound counts.

One homeless veteran this Christmas is appalling; hundreds on the street is a disgrace. We know you feel the same and together we can make a difference.

For some vulnerable veterans, the festive period will be a time of sadness and isolation – living on the street is a brutal and dangerous existence.

According to research, the number of people losing their life whilst homeless has increased by 80% in the past two years alone. The statistics are catastrophic.

The Veterans’ Foundation is committed to funding multiple projects across the UK that provide safe shelter for homeless veterans, as well as ongoing support so they can rebuild their lives - it is the least they deserve.

When you make a donation today – no matter how small - to our Homes For Veterans Christmas campaign, you will be playing your part in changing the lives, and saving the lives, of those who proudly served in our British armed forces.

Richard Gammage served 27 years in the RAF and is now Chief Executive of Stoll, a military charity dedicated to supporting homeless ex-servicemen and women.

Richard explained more about the challenges facing some veterans: “It’s absolutely heart-breaking that every year hundreds of people in the UK die through homelessness, some put it as high as 1200.

According to research:

  • The number of people losing their life whilst homeless has increased by 80% in the past two years alone

  • People sleeping on the streets are almost 17 times more likely to be victims of violence (Crisis)

  • Homeless people are over 9 times more likely to take their own life than the general population (Crisis)

And certainly, the number of veterans who are vulnerable to homelessness is significant. At any one time, there could be as many as 400 veterans sleeping on the streets and that can’t be right.

Anything we can do to reduce that figure, to get it as close to zero as we can possibly achieve, has got to be the right thing to do,” he added.

“To have the support of the Veterans’ Foundation in helping to provide shelter for vulnerable veterans so they may live an independent life is a joy.”

Steve Bentham-Bates, CEO of Help 4 Homeless Veterans, added: “Lots of veterans are unseen homeless; sleeping on friends’ couches, sleeping in cars, and we can help by providing a home for rent through working with private landlords and local authorities.

We are extremely grateful to the Veterans’ Foundation and its supporters for helping us to provide for homeless veterans.”
