£75,000 birthday surprise for ex-submariner

August 19 2024

Former submariner Steven Leech got an early birthday surprise when we called to say he’d scooped the £75,000 jackpot in our July draw.

Steven turns 58 on 20th August and will be celebrating by taking his family away on holiday for a few days.

Steven was in the Royal Navy Submarine Service, Polaris Programme, from 1983 to 1991 and then spent more than 30 years in the prison service. He has been doing the lottery since before the COVID pandemic and says he signed up as a way to support his ‘fellow brothers in arms’.

“I know from experience how difficult it can be for people coming out of the services. There can be a feeling of isolation and of lack of support,” said Steven, who lives near Crewe, with wife, Angela, and sons, Jack, 25, and Harry, 20.

“We’re one big family, so when I heard how the Veterans’ Foundation raises funds through the Veterans’ Lottery to give grants to help organisations that assist servicemen and women, and their families, I knew I had to sign up.

“You don’t expect to win, so it was a bit of a shock. I never win anything, so getting that call was such a fabulous surprise.

“It feels great to know I’ve been donating to such good causes, which was enough, but to be able to support my family too is a tremendous feeling. It was a fabulous birthday surprise.”

To be in with a chance of winning up to £75,000, just like Steven, and change the lives of British veterans in need, please play the Veterans' Lottery today.
