Henry Maitland Macintosh was born in Kelso. A gifted runner, he won a gold medal in 4 x 10 metres relay at the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm.
When the World War I started, he was commissioned into the 8th battalion, Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders.
In the summer of 1918, during the Second Battle of the Somme, Captain Macintosh was killed in action. He was 26. He was buried in Senlis French National Cemetery.
