I served on the HMS CAMPERDOWN in the late 50s and had the good fortune of meeting him, I chatted with him many times, A quiet reserved pleasant person, It was always:- Hi George. Everything ok, Yes thanks ,,, then you had to expand the conversation if you wanted more response. Those stripes are for years oF service 1 for every 4 years, to a maximum of 4 after 12 year’s The saying went 3 BADGES GOLD, TOO ( #######) OLD

His son Kenneth is a member of Chard RNA and says that he first met his Dad at aged 7. Apparently when George was on home leave he would have arranged his mates to telegraph a Recall to ship message! So much was his love of life afloat.

In the 1950s, I served on both HMS SAINTES and then HMS ARMADA, which were, in turn, the squadron leader ships of the Third Destroyer Squadron, in which were HMS ST KITTS and HMS CAMPERDOWN (both of which George served on). As a young Signal Boy, one of my daily tasks was to 'clean the Aft Brass Pole from which our 'Captain's Pennant' flew. When in harbour with the rest of the squadron, GEORGE would - OFTEN - be cleaning their equivalent on his ship. We waved our acknowledgements to each other on many occasions. I met him ashore (just once) introduced myself and we had a good old laugh about our respective 'cleaning duties' A character without a doubt. Safe anchorage mate
