VF grant cooking up a storm

February 12 2025

The Veterans’ Foundation has awarded a grant of nearly £2,000 to Decorum NI to help refurbish its veterans’ drop-in centre’s kitchen facilities.

Decorum NI supports members of the security forces, including soldiers, police officers and prison officers, and their families, during the Troubles in Northern Ireland during Operation Banner from 1969 to 2007.

Its drop-in centre in Bangor is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, providing refreshments for more than 300 people every month, and was struggling to cater adequately for that demand with its existing facilities.

That’s when the charity came up with its ‘Hamely Kitchen’ project, to refurbish the kitchen and stock it with a new dishwasher, cooker, toaster and kettles.

The new equipment means the organisation’s 940 members can now be provide meals, when necessary, as well as accessing the normal drop-in refreshments.

Gerald Murphy, the vice-chair of Decorum NI, said: “We are extremely grateful for this grant and for the benefits the new equipment will make to our members.

“Out drop-in centre is a safe and comfortable space where our members enjoy coming together to meet their friends and stay connected with their community, so it is wonderful to know they can be catered for appropriately.”
