The VC Gallery has appointed Wales’ first female ex-forces peer mentor, Jean MacDonald Ward, thanks to funding from the Veterans’ Foundation.
Jean will support the veteran community in Pembrokeshire.
Her landmark appointment coincided with International Women’s Day, on 8th March, to celebrate the achievements of female veterans and highlight the importance of gender-inclusive support in the armed forces community.
Jean served for 22 years in the British Army and brings a wealth of experience, leadership, and understanding to her new role.
The Veterans’ Foundation has funded her appointment with a £74,000 grant over three years.
Her appointment ensures that female veterans in Wales have a dedicated voice and an advocate who understands their journey, while also offering vital assistance to all veterans, regardless of gender.
She will help all veterans navigate the transition to civilian life, access mental health and wellbeing services, and find camaraderie and purpose beyond their military careers.
While all veterans face challenges in civilian life, ex-servicewomen are often underrepresented and may encounter additional barriers in accessing support services.
Barry John MBE, Founder of The VC Gallery, said: “We are incredibly grateful to the Veterans’ Foundation for making this possible.
“The appointment of Wales’ first female ex-forces peer mentor is a major step forward in ensuring that all veterans receive the support they need. Having someone as experienced and dedicated as Jean will make a real difference in breaking down barriers and providing a space where veterans feel seen, heard, and supported.”
Colonel James Phillips, Veterans Commissioner for Wales, also welcomed the announcement.
“Well done VC Gallery and thank you to the Veterans’ Foundation!” he said.
“I know from speaking with female veterans that it is important to them that they have access to a female peer mentor who can provide support tailored to their specific needs.”
