The Veterans’ Foundation has raised around £25,000 for four homeless charities as part of its campaign to fund safe shelter for armed forces’ veterans over Christmas.
Too many veterans find themselves homeless after leaving military service, and many may suffer violence as a result of life on the street.
For many vulnerable British veterans, the festive period will be a time of sadness and isolation and they cite living on the street to be a brutal and dangerous experience.
According to research, the number of people losing their life while homeless has increased by 12% since 2022.
That's why the Veterans’ Foundation funds multiple projects across the UK to provide safe shelter for homeless veterans, as well as ongoing support so they can rebuild their lives.
“One homeless veteran is a sad state of affairs, but the many that actually have to spend time sleeping rough is unacceptable and we all have a responsibility to ensure we do something tangible to help where we can,” said Veterans’ Foundation founder and CEO, retired Major General, David Shaw.
“Our generous supporters helped us raise more than £20,000 in just a few days, but we aim to raise much more, to ensure we can get as many of our veterans off the streets as possible this festive season.
“We’ll be donating what we raise to charities across the UK with proven success in housing veterans,” said David.
The funds will go to Help 4 Homeless Veterans, the Block Armed Forces Foundation, Royal British Legion Industries and Church Homeless Charity, all of which make efforts to reduce homelessness among veterans.
