A former theatre nurse has scooped the £7,000 first prize in the latest Veterans’ Lottery prize draw.
Gail Cumming dedicated 32 years of her working life to nursing and during this time was based at the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, where many of her colleagues were RAF veterans who served in the Falklands Conflict.
It was these close relationships, and a deep understanding of what it takes to serve in the military, which inspired the 62-year-old from Worcester to play the Veterans’ Lottery.
“I had the pleasure of working with some incredible people during my time as a theatre nurse and I think it’s so important that we all give something back to those who gave so much during their service," Gail said.
“This is my way of saying thank you and I couldn’t think of a better way of giving back.”
The mother of two has only been playing since last summer and admitted to thinking that ‘it was a joke’ when she received the phone call to inform her that she’d won the £7,000 first prize.
“I can’t even win an argument, so this came as an absolute shock to both me and my family as both my husband, Ian, and our children just shook our heads in disbelief", she continued.
“I took early retirement from nursing as I really suffer with my knees and back and we are currently making some improvements to our home so the money from the win is a real godsend. I still can’t believe it.
“It’s great to win, but I didn’t join up for this reason as £10 per month is a small price to pay when you see how much good the Veterans’ Foundation is doing."
