Navy veteran, Rory White, 81 of Yeovil, Somerset, scooped £7,000 in our October Veterans Lottery draw and plans to take a cruise with wife Renee in the spring.
Rory and Renee were at the races in Bath with their daughter when the call came through to tell him the good news.
“I thought it was confirmation of a medical appointment when it first came through, so it was especially nice to hear it was news of my win,” said Rory.
Rory has been doing the lottery since it was launched and has won a few small prizes over the years.
“As an ex-serviceman myself, I like how the money supports such a broad range of charities that help people like me.”
Rory said he appreciates the support our grants give to veterans, including those with sight-related challenges, as he suffers from age-related macular degeneration. Renee has recently also been diagnosed with the condition and the pair have had to give up driving.
“We have a cruise booked around Portugal in April, so this win will help with that, but also pay for the taxis we need to take now since we have had to give up driving,” he said.
“It was a lovely surprise, and we are delighted. The money will come in very useful.”
Rory served in the Fleet Air Arm from 1960 to 1983. He was based in Cornwall, where is serviced helicopters.
A second prize of £3,500 was won by Leonard May from Poole, who said he was absolutely over the moon and is also hoping to take a holiday with his wife. He was inspired to play the Veterans’ Lottery after a conversation with one of our fundraisers at a service station.
