"Both my dad and grandad served in the British Army, and I never signed up to win. I play because I feel it's my duty to do my bit for veterans."
These are the words of Kent roofer Warren Snow, who was left stunned after winning £3,500 second prize in the Veterans' Lottery.
Warren runs his own roofing company in Kent, and has played the Veterans' Foundation Lottery for around six months.
He signed up after meeting one of the charity's fundraisers at his local Sainsbury's supermarket.
"We support quite a few charities through the business," he explained.
"This one was a personal choice for me because I think it’s so important to give something back to those who have served and more people should do the same."
Although military service has been part of his family's history for generations, Warren says he never expected to become one of the Veterans' Foundation's latest lottery winners.
In fact, when the phone rang to tell him he'd won the £3,500 second prize his first thought was that it was a scam.
"I honestly thought it was a scam,” Warren continued.
"I get bombarded by people trying to rip me off, so when someone rang to say I'd won £3,500, I didn't believe it."
It wasn't until the caller explained they didn't need any bank details and that the prize money would simply arrive in his account that he realised the win was genuine.
"I haven't won anything, ever, I don't think, so it was a really nice surprise."
Like many Veterans' Lottery players, he says winning was never his motivation.
"I completely forgot it was even a lottery, to be honest as I just saw the money going out of my bank each month and knew I was supporting veterans through the Veterans’ Foundation."
His prize money prize will now go towards a family holiday with his two daughters.
The Veterans’ Lottery is the UK’s largest single-cause lottery and is a key funding stream for the Foundation’s grant programme.
