How Age UK is helping Veterans in The Wirral

January 18 2021

How does Age UK Wirral help Veterans?

Veterans’ Foundation is proud to support Age UK Wirral in their efforts to meet the needs of elderly Veterans in their local area. The charity offers its services to anyone who has been in the Armed Forces for a day or more and who is over 65.

Often, the first point of contact for a Veteran to Age UK Wirral is a drop-in centre. Here Veterans can come into the charity’s office and have a one to one chat with experienced staff. The staff will find out about the Veteran and what their needs are. Staff will then generally explain what services are available and if the Veteran has serious and immediate needs they will look to provide that support quickly. If the Veteran is unable to get to the drop-in centre by themselves, Age UK Wirral will organise a visit to their home.

Many Veterans suffer from isolation, Age UK Wirral offers activities throughout the week designed to help stave loneliness away and provide a community for the aged Veterans in their care. These activities include trips to see interesting landmarks, breakfast clubs, workshops and discussion groups. Veterans are encouraged to reminisce about their past as a group, this helps foster a sense of belonging and camaraderie among the group. Veterans are also encouraged to write their stories down to help them cope with their past and as a helpful exercise in memory.

During the Covid-19 Pandemic, the staff at Age UK Wirral won many plaudits and local admirers as they went above and beyond the call of duty. Brimstage Brewery, a local brewery highlighted the good work the charity did: “Over the past few months, the staff and volunteers of Age UK Wirral have launched an immense response to Covid-19. With over 130,000 community touchpoints, they’ve protected and supported the vulnerable in our community by picking up prescriptions, groceries and by accompanying back home those who have been discharged from hospital but who have nobody else to care for them. Well done and thank you guys, you are amazing!” As a show of respect and gratitude, the brewery delivered 500 bottles of their beer named Brew For Heroes to the Age UK Wirral staff.
